Techniques Used In Varicose Vein Removal Nyc

Varicose veins are those that lie under the skin but close to the surface. They are usually swollen due to overspill of blood from veins running deep in the muscles of the legs. This results when some valves that should allow flow of blood to deep veins from superficial veins cease to function well. In considering varicose vein removal nyc has one of the best facilities and doctors.

There are many types of surgical operations that can be used. The surgeon explains the options and advises on the best one to be used. There is the technique called ligation and stripping that involves removal of long or short saphenous veins in the legs. Two cuts of about 4cm are made, the first in the groin and the other in the lower legs close to the ankle or knees.

In a process called ligation, the faulty vein gets tied. This is done so as to prevent any blood from flowing through it. By using a thin flexible wire, the affected vein is pulled out. This is made possible through the cut that is made either at the ankle or knee. The entire procedure is done when one is asleep, which is why general anesthesia is used.

In endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation, a small cut is made next to the varicose vein. There is then insertion of a catheter, which is guided into position through the use of an ultrasound. Thereafter, a fine laser is passed into the veins which produces the heat used to destroy the walls of the veins. Local anesthesia is used.

Sclerotherapy involves injection of chemicals into the veins, damaging and closing them in the process. For smaller veins located below the knees, liquid sclerotherapy is the best option. Foam sclerotherapy is used in the case of larger ones. One may be required to wear compression stockings after the procedure.

One shortcoming of sclerotherapy is the fact that it offers reprieve only on the short term. Furthermore, it is accompanied by some very serious side effects and complications. These include but are not limited to strokes and damage to nerves. The safety level of ultrasound during this procedure depends on whether or not one suffered from deep vein thrombosis previously.

There are other techniques. These are phlebectomy and transilluminated powered phlebectomy. The first one is more effective for treatment of smaller surface veins. It is done in conjunction with ligation and stripping at certain times. Also used for the same purpose, the second one is not as commonly used.

Preparation for the surgery is very important. To begin with, anybody that smokes should cease before the procedure. Smoking increases risk of contracting chest infections and wounds. This is bound to considerably slow down the recovery process. The preparation also involves asking the doctor any questions involving the procedure.

In considering the recovery period after varicose vein removal nyc residents should expect that to be around two weeks. The period is also dependent on the type of surgery one undergoes. It also varies between individuals. Painkillers are likely to be used during this time.
